From our address on Ortviksvägen in Sundsvall it is 92 kilometres to Kramfors, a little over an hour on the road — 1 hour 17 minutes when the tarmac is dry. That drive shapes how the day is planned. We arrive fully crewed and load in one continuous run rather than shuttling back and forth, and the travel time is inside the fixed price. There is no mileage charge added to the invoice afterwards. Kramfors lies in a valley on the western bank of the Ångerman river, roughly 20 km in from the Gulf of Bothnia, surrounded by hilly ground — the two nearest summits reach 355 and 291 metres. You feel it in the local roads. National road 90 runs through the town and carries most of our driving here, but the last hundred metres up to a doorway or a driveway are often steeper than people remember, and a fully loaded moving van does not reverse happily down an icy slope. So we ask about gradient, turning space and where the van may stand while we are still quoting, instead of improvising a solution on moving day. Härnösand is 44 kilometres away, just under 40 minutes, so moves between Kramfors and Härnösand can usually be finished in a single day. If the household is going further south, to Sundsvall or on towards Stockholm, we plan it as a longer job from the outset — calmer for everyone, and the price holds regardless of how the day unfolds.
The Höga Kusten bridge, the wind, and a van that catches it
Kramfors borders the Höga Kusten area to the west, and the Höga Kusten bridge is the obvious route north towards Örnsköldsvik and Umeå. The Swedish Transport Administration closes that bridge completely in gusts of around 30 metres per second, and the diversion for heavy vehicles is more than 60 kilometres. A moving van is by definition wind-sensitive — tall, light for its height and presenting a large flank to the gusts. So this is not a theoretical risk to us but a planning question: we watch the wind forecast in the days before and would rather rebook than gamble. A fixed price should not fall apart because the weather does. Winter in Ådalen is also harder than out on the coast. The January mean in Ångermanland is around minus three degrees by the sea but approaches minus ten in the western valleys, and Kramfors sits in that direction. At Forse, further up the same valley, the snow depth rose by 60 centimetres in a single day in January 2021. That is not a hypothetical example. On site that turns into three concrete steps. We clear and grit the carrying route before the lifting starts, not while it is going on. We lay down mats and protection inside the doorway, because the snow and grit carried in on boots is exactly what ruins a floor you are about to hand over freshly cleaned. And we allow for a longer carry in winter, since the van rarely gets as close to the door in February as it does in July.
Krambo's blocks, the mill villages and the houses on private roads
The town of Kramfors has around 6,600 residents and the municipality just over 17,000, spread across a large area. The municipal housing company Krambo has roughly 1,900 flats, in blocks with names like Bruket, Snickaren, Magistern, Penningen and Uttern & Vesslan, and they are found in most parts of town. Outside the main town they also let flats in Bollstabruk, Nyland, Ullånger, Lunde and Nordingrå — we drive all of those routes. The building regulations only impose a lift on new construction above two storeys, and most of the housing stock in Kramfors is older than that; older buildings can be exempted even when rebuilt. The result is that plenty of addresses are reached by stairs, and that the lift has to be planned around the measurements of the stairwell rather than around what fits in the van. Tell us whether there is a lift, how many flights there are and whether the entrance has a high threshold, and we can price it correctly from the start instead of adjusting on the day. Bollstabruk is an old mill village where the municipality has commissioned a separate cultural heritage study of the buildings, and the sawmill still shapes the place. There, and in the villages around Nordingrå and Ullånger, many houses sit on gravel or privately maintained roads. During the spring thaw the road's keeper may temporarily cap how heavy a vehicle can be — 12 tonnes is common, sometimes as low as 4 — or close the road entirely. If that is where you live, say so when you ask for a quote. We contact the road owner, check the restriction and solve the last stretch with a smaller vehicle or by shuttling. That belongs in the price before moving day, not as a discovery on it.
